Family targeted by panga-wielding robbers

The family was tied up and their house ransacked.

A Vleikop family was recently targeted by panga-wielding robbers while they were watching television.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Spokesperson for the Randfontein Police, the complainant and his family were watching TV on 11 June, when they were suddenly overpowered by three unknown men.

“Two of the intruders were armed with pangas, while the third was in possession of an axe,” Ernst added.

The family members were instructed to keep quiet while the suspects were tying them up with cable ties. Once they were tied up, the suspects ransacked the house and took TVs, a tablet, computers and a DVD player.

Fortunately, none of the family members were injured during the robbery.

Police precautionary measures to deter house robberies:
• Keep a dog for early warning. Investigate when the dogs bark.
• Lock all outside doors.
• Keep windows without burglar bars closed.
• Join your neighbourhood watch.
• Report any suspicious activities in your area to the neighbourhood watch.
• Install a panic alarm.
• Conduct a background check on new employees or tenants on your property.
