Police: Three arrested in vicious Shoprite heist

Spokesperson: Around 20 armed men were involved.

Three of the armed robbers who targeted Shoprite and held staff and clients against their will on Friday over the weekend have been caught.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said,

Police officers in the West Rand worked tirelessly throughout Saturday night to secure three more arrests in the Shoprite business robbery.”

The information police gathered led the police to Houtkop, Sebokeng were the three suspects were found in two hostels within the area on Saturday, 11 June. The three suspects were found in possession of an additional firearm and goods from the Shoprite heist.

The other two suspects were shot and killed while the heist was in progress on Friday, 10 June but it has now emerged that around 20 armed men were involved in the Shoprite heist.

Police are investigating whether the CBD Shoprite heist on Friday is linked to the Mohlakeng Shoprite robbery which took place three weeks ago.

The police are now urging residents to supply any information they can regarding the suspects.

“Our members put their own lives at risk to protect our communities. The Randfontein Police will stand firm against the criminal element,” said Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police Station Commander.
