Exclusive: Mother of stabbing victim speaks about loss

Emotional words from a mother taking a stand against abuse.

The mother of the young woman who was allegedly stabbed and killed by her ex-boyfriend spoke to the Herald in an exclusive interview about the loss of her only child.

Evette Margaret April is the mother of Roxanne Andrews, who tragically passed away after what the family alleged was a stabbing on the streets of Toekomsrus.

April explained Roxanne was her only child. Her daughter was quiet and was the only hope for a struggling family.

“When my daughter was in hospital, the first thing she asked me was what was she going to do about her job, because she’d just started and she didn’t want to lose her job,” April said.

April explained further that everything Roxanne did after she had a daughter was for her daughter. She said she was determined to give her daughter the best life she could possibly give her.

Sharing details about her daughter again was extremely emotional for April as well as Caroline Adams, Roxanne’s grandmother.

“She always wanted to help herself. Even when she was in hospital. Even though the chances of her walking again were slim, she did things for herself when she was in hospital.”

According to April, her daughter had made progress in hospital after the incident but things suddenly took a turn for the worst, and she succumbed to her injuries.

“She was very sick and the doctors intervened. I saw my daughter dying before my eyes.

I kept talking to her but she didn’t even recognise my voice. I told her that her daughter was waiting for her to get better but she didn’t recognise that, either.”

April explained since Roxanne’s death, her daughter no longer sleeps through the night and has frequent nightmares. As soon as the family picks up the pieces, they will be going for counselling, April said.

April is appealing to the community to stand by the family during the coming court cases.
