How to track a lost or stolen phone

Use your IMEI number or an application to keep track of your phone.

Smart phones have in theory been designed not to be stolen or at least to be quickly recovered after being stolen or even misplaced.

There are various ways in this day and age to recover a stolen phone or make the precious information on it disappear before thieving eyes get hold of it.

The one way to ensure your phone can be recovered once it’s stolen is to get the phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. This can be done by dialing *#06#. The number is to be jotted down and kept in a safe place (but not on the phone itself).

The phone’s IMEI number can be used to track the GPS location of the phone and the police can be contacted to recover it. There are various companies out there that can track electronic devices for a fee.

Alternatively for lost phones, for most phones on the market there are applications to recover lost phones.

For Apple, the application is called find my iPhone, iPad, Mac. For Blackberry there is BlackBerry Protect. Android has Android Device Manager and Windows Phone has find my phone.

Most of these applications and smart phones also have the ability to lock the phone remotely or wipe it remotely.
