Traffic cops don’t just give fines

Traffic police give children a helping hand across the road.

Traffic police don’t only write out fines, they help pedestrians as well.

Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo said the Randfontein Traffic Police not only have a mandate to stop motorists from violating traffic laws and to enforce bylaws, but also to educate people about road safety.

He explained that collisions involving pedestrians are the biggest contributors to road deaths on South African roads.

Traffic police officers, traffic wardens and Community Work Project (CWP) volunteers take to sidewalks every morning and afternoon to help residents, especially pupils, cross the roads. Two of the most prominent locations officers can be found are the new Mohlakeng Extension 11 sections on the R28.

“We do this because large numbers of residents cross the R28 to go to work or school, and we want them to cross safely,” Mampondo said.

Archie Bakaile, traffic warden said they help children cross the road from 6.30am to 8am, then again from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Come rain or shine, officers and volunteers are at their posts. Archie told the Herald that despite winter mornings being extremely cold, it won’t keep them from helping residents.

We started with this years ago,” Archie said.

The project is also a way for traffic police members to curb pedestrian deaths on one of Randfontein’s most dangerous roads.
