Meet Baska, a non-scary clown

Baska's performance is also surprisingly educational.

Every circus needs a clown and the Mongolian Dream Circus which recently visited Randfontein is no exception.

Baska Namjilmaa, 42, has been with the Mongolian Dream Circus for five years. He attended the Mongolian Circus School in his youth and decided that he wanted to make people laugh. Baska joined the circus to fulfill his dream, but not without his wife and “child” – a Maltese poodle.

When the Herald asked him how he puts his performance together, he smiled and said, “Through life and life experience.”

Baska is also aware that clowns scare a lot of people but explains that scary movies and television have played a big part in creating the scary clown stigma.

I make children very happy – if someone is scared of me at first, they always love me by the end of the show,” he said.

Baska also loves travelling and does not mind the long hours the circus spends moving from town to town.

He says he meets lots of new people every day and there is never a dull moment. Baska’s performance is surprisingly educational, as he tries to incorporate important life lessons in his shows.

Baska is definitely not planning to quit the circus any time soon – he’s planning to entertain audiences all over South Africa for a good few years yet.
