Double robbery suspect arrested

It was confirmed that both the Shoprite store and the Liquor City were victims of the robbery.

EPR Security has identified the suspect they arrested on Friday night (13 May) as one of the gunmen involved in a business robbery at a Shoprite in a shopping centre in Mohlakeng.

It turns out the gunmen were part of a gang that targeted two shops at a shopping centre in the area simultaneously that night, the second target being the Liquor City situated opposite the Shoprite store.

According to Johan Krogh, EPR General Manager, “EPR received a panic signal from Liquor City (our client) in Ntuli Street, Mohlakeng. Two EPR response officers, Abe Wobbe and Izak Kruger, responded to the call out, and based on information received from the public – such as the direction in which the suspects fled and a description of clothing – they gave chase and managed to locate one of the 12 suspects. They also recovered a firearm that was allegedly used in the robbery.

The suspect was then taken back to the scene and was positively identified as one of the robbers involved in the robbery.

“The suspect was handed over to the Randfontein Police for further investigation.”

Krogh lauded the reaction officers for their dedication saying, “Well done EPR response officers, we are proud of you.”

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, confirmed that after the armed robbery at Shoprite, a shootout between the police and suspects ensued in Moroka Street, and that a bystander was injured and taken to hospital. She added that a police vehicle was damaged and numerous empty cartridges were found in the yard of a house in Moroka Street.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police Station commander, commended the members who responded immediately to the complaint and those responsible for the arrest and seizure of the firearm.

Randfontein Police are investigating cases of business robbery and attempted murder.
