Man caught with hijacked vehicle on N12

Police: They stopped the vehicle and the driver allegedly said he bought the vehicle from someone.

The manhunt for hijackers terrorising N12 motorists continues.

This comes after a man, 32, was arrested for being in the possession of a hijacked vehicle but was found not to be linked to the spate of N12 hijackings.

According to Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the vehicle was initially spotted by Netstar’s recovery unit after which they called the police at approximately 2am on Sunday, 15 May.

The vehicle was allegedly driving along the N12 towards Johannesburg. Police drove to the place it was spotted – near Bonzela Chicken in Zuurbekom. It was allegedly reported stolen in Potchefstroom.

“They stopped the vehicle and the driver allegedly said he bought the vehicle from someone.

The suspect was arrested for being in possession of the hijacked vehicle,” Lefakane said.

The suspect appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 16 May.

Although the suspect is said by Lefakane not to be linked to the N12 hijackings, it is still a victory for Bekkersdal Police in terms of crime on the N12 and it also brings them a step closer to finding the suspects responsible for terrorising motorists on the N12.

For motorists driving on the N12, hijackers use a white Golf, white Polo, or white VW Caddy. Some have also been parading in Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) uniforms.

Lefakane warned that motorists should be aware of the pattern and should not stop for unmarked cars, they should rather drive to a nearby police station or public place.

Should any resident see the vehicles described, they can contact the Bekkersdal Police on 011 755 0000.
