N12 attacks: Manhunt launched for dangerous criminals

Police: Avoid hitchhiking especially at night.

The Bekkersdal Police have had it with crime on the N12 and have launched a manhunt for the suspects following yet another robbery at gunpoint.

The latest incident took place at around 7.18pm on Friday, 29 April, said Sargent Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

A couple allegedly was waiting for their transport on the side of the N12 when they were approached by two men. The men walked past them and asked whether they were going to Johannesburg and when they didn’t respond, one of the suspects pulled out his gun and cocked it. The other man then held one of the victims up with a knife. Lefakane added the victims were robbed of their cellphones, laptops, tablets, money and ID books.

One suspect is tall and slender, the other one is short and he was wearing a balaclava,” Lefakane explained.

The Bekkersdal Police are appealing to to the community to avoid hitchhiking especially at night. This is not the first crime incident on the N12, the Bekkersdal Police are also experiencing challenges with hijacking on the N12.

In the hijacking incidents, bogus traffic police officers pull motorists over and take their cars. The suspects usually dress in traffic police or Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) uniforms and they drive white cars.

They are armed and are either in a white Golf, white Polo or a white VW Caddy,” she said.

Lefakane said motorists should be aware of this and should not stop when occupants of unmarked cars signal them over. She added that motorists should rather drive to a nearby police station or garage to be safe.

In a previous hijacking on the N12 in Westonaria, a man was hijacked but before the suspects took the car, they drove off with the man only to drop him off in Jabulane, Soweto.
