Armed robber strikes as family gets home

Police: Do not give unwelcome guests the opportunity to follow you into the house.

A mother and her family in Mohlakeng recently were held at gunpoint shortly after they arrived home, Randfontein Police said.

The incident took place at around 7.30pm one Thursday last month.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed, the victim, a 41-year-old mother allegedly arrived home when an unknown suspect entered her home.

“The suspect was armed with a firearm and at gunpoint he forced the family into a bedroom,” Ernst said.

The suspect demanded cellphones before fleeing the scene. Fortunately no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

“This is but one example of a surprise attack on residents when arriving home.

Residents are at their most vulnerable when returning home from work, especially if it is late in the evening,” Ernst said.

In addition, Ernst suggested that residents ensure their property is secure before getting out of their vehicles. Ernst further urged residents to lock the door behind them as soon as they enter their homes.

“Do not give unwelcome guests the opportunity to follow you into the house. If you have family members inside the house, make an arrangement that they always keep a lookout while you park, unpack and enter the house,” she said.
