Video: Scene of crash at ‘Crossing of Death’

Reactions from both ends of the spectrum spark on social media.

The death of two women in a collision on the Northway-R24 in Randfontein prompted comments from both ends of the spectrum.

The two women died after allegedly ignoring the Northway Road stop sign in the north-bound lane, resulting in a Ford Ranger T-boning them.

Some readers offered their condolences to the families of the deceased while others were adamant that the law should have been obeyed at the intersection.

Some readers who are familiar with the ‘Crossing of Death’ agreed that intervention is needed at the intersection and others considered putting up traffic cameras at the intersection at their own cost.

This is not the first collision at the crossing and until something is done about more apparent signage and road marking, it will not be the last. A reader on Facebook also came forward saying two years ago his car was written off when another man skipped the stop street at the intersection.

The last accident before the two elderly women died was on 18 March according to Neil Venter, a resident who sent a letter to the Herald a week before the collision complaining about how dangerous the intersection is.
