Two elderly women killed at ‘Crossing of Death’

Residents, paramedics and traffic police are fed up with the 'Crossing of Death'.

Two elderly women tragically died in a crash at one of Randfontein’s deadliest intersections, the Northway Road-R24 crossing, also known as the Randfontein-Tarlton intersection near Elandsvlei.

The women in a silver Mercedes-Benz were travelling on Northway Road towards Tarlton when they allegedly ignored the stop sign. A gold Ford Ranger travelling on the R24 towards Krugersdorp subsequently T-boned their vehicle.

The impact of the collision resulted in the Mercedes-Benz landing in a ditch approximately 30 metres further. The lifeless bodies of the two women were found still trapped in the vehicle, while the driver and passenger of the Ford sustained moderate to serious injuries.

Quick Response Services (QRS) declared the elderly women dead and ER24 transported the passenger of the Ford Ranger, while Netcare 911 treated the driver on scene.

Mogale City Traffic Police as well as the police were on scene. Later members of the West Rand District Municipality arrived to talk to traffic police about putting forward a motion to the MEC of Roads and Transport to do something about the dangerous intersection.

In a letter to the Herald, Neil Venter said accidents at the intersection has been a weekly occurrence for the past year. He said the latest collision was on Friday 18 March – just a month before this horrific crash.

Motorists on the R24 have the right of way at the intersection and the speed limit on the road is 100km/h. On Northway Road, the speed limit near the stop street is 80km/h.

Signage, as well as the paint on the road indicating a stop street for vehicles travelling on Northway Road are not clear, making accidents at the intersection inevitable, especially for motorists not familiar with the road.

It is unclear if the elderly women were from Randfontein.

Community members on scene, who wished not to be named, said government needs to intervene and make the intersection a four-way stop and lower the speed limit near the intersection before more people lose their lives.
