Just in: Unlicensed taxi smashes into elderly woman’s car

The taxi was said to have skipped the stop street.

An elderly woman was hit by a taxi seemingly without a license disk.

The collision took place before 11am on Wednesday, 13 April at the Lazaar Avenue and Union Street intersection in Randgate.

It was alleged the woman was turning into Union Street from Lazaar’s West bound lane when a taxi allegedly skipped the stop street driving from the East bound lane.

The elderly woman’s car was hit and traveled an additional 500 meters from where the collision took place due to the sheer force the taxi hit the car at.

According to Johan Kihn, an eyewitness, after the elderly woman’s car was hit, the taxi driver was trying to bend metal preventing the tyre from moving away to flee the scene. Kihn said he pulled up behind the taxi and prevented the driver from running away.

Various witnesses on scene said the taxi did not have a license and when the Herald inspected the taxi’s windscreen, no license disk was present.

The elderly woman was injured and was transported by Quick Response Services (QRS) when the Herald arrived on scene.

The Randfontein Police as well as the Randfontein Traffic Police were on scene for further investigations.
