Inspirational career guidance for teenage girls

From female fire fighters to aquatic ecology, the Girl Guides were given the low down.

The Bekkersdal Girl Guides on Saturday had a career day and their young members were treated to talks from strong career women in the community.

The event was held at the Donaldson Dam. The Bekkersdal Girl Guides in all their numbers sat on their camping chairs in anticipation of learning about different kinds of careers.

At the event, an array of careers were presented including journalism, policing, fire fighting, psychometry and ecology among others.

Some of the presentations were not just talks on what is needed to get into a specific career. With aquatic ecology, the Girl Guides were taken for a walk to the banks of the Donaldson Dam and were taught about small organisms in the dam and also how to protect them through looking after the dam itself.

One of the speakers at the event spoke not only about one career she went into but many and explained that sometimes it takes a longer time and experiences in order to find the right career. She added that some people are good at many things and have more than one career.

Present at the event were the Yes! Girls who are part of a campaign of the same name. The project launched in eight African countries and subsequently, visitors from far away lands were also present at the event, encouraging the girls to continue being Girl Guides as they can also see the big wide world out there.
