Lucky Matome – one of the West Rand’s finest

'The greatest award is a smile from a community member you're helping'

Randfontein’s Constable Lucky Matome has been raking in awards and is the epitome of a top cop even though he started out in a profession furthest from law enforcement.

He recently received awards for being Man of the Year in the district, province and runner-up nationally.

Awards from 2015 to 2016:

• West Rand Cluster Prestige Awards: Communication of the Year

• West Rand Cluster Prestige Awards: Man of the Year

• Provincial Police Awards: Man of the Year

• National Excellence Awards: Man of the Year – first runner-up

Lucky has been in law enforcement for the past 16 years. He started out working as a reservist for the police from 2001 to 2009, after which he was appointed as a full-time officer. He has since moved around the West Rand, climbing the ranks. He currently serves at Tarlton Police.

Before his life in blue, Lucky was a kwaito artist as part of the group Jalumsi. They recorded an album and performed with the likes of TKZ, DJ Fresh, and other now famous artists.

He joined the police force around the time he was robbed and his father’s car was broken into in two separate incidents. He said he was angry for a long time about the incidents as he was completely helpless.

About his awards, he said the greatest award for him is not a trophy or a medal, but a smile or a thank you from a member of the public who he’s helped.

I have a job I enjoy and love. I want to leave a legacy behind.

“I don’t want to be remembered as a corrupt, rude officer. I want to leave behind a great legacy and I feel that if every one of my peers in the South African Police Service wanted the same thing the police would be a powerful, dignified organisation,” he said.

Lucky thanks everyone who helped to achieve his awards, especially the public.

“I would like to thank Maponya 911, EPR, ER24, Mogale City Local Municipality, Woolworths and all stakeholders involved. I thank Martie Mans, principal typist at the Tarlton Police Station who worked closely with me. I also could not have done this without my principals, commanders and colleagues,” he said.
