R’fontein Post office saga – SAPO responds

Regional manager promises that a plan is in place to bring back the post office to its former glory.

After a man was photographed sleeping on a counter where residents collect their post, the Herald published an article where the regional manager of the Witwatersrand Post Office responded.

Paul Fouché, Post Office regional manager in the Witwatersrand area, says, “The South African Post Office (SAPO) will engage the local police force regarding homeless people who sleep overnight at the Post Office facilities and compromise security at the facilities. We are liaising with the police with a view to obtaining night patrols so as to increase our security arrangements.

“A contractor has been engaged to tidy up the garden at the Randfontein post office and work is due to start on Wednesday.

As a result of wide-ranging cuts in spending, the SA Post Office is currently facing an adverse financial position which compromises its ability to procure gardening services.

Fouché added, “We take pride in the fact that the SA Post Office is an essential part of local communities and, for that reason, one of the focus areas in the near future will be to consistently maintain our post office facilities.”
