Biker survives horror crash

Family member: This is going to be a long road to recovery.

A biker is recovering in hospital after he was involved in a serious accident last week.

Raymond van der Merwe, 37, sustained critically injuries after his motorcycle collided with the side of a light motor vehicle on the R559 outside of Carletonville last Wednesday.

Van der Merwe’s cousin, Michelle Potgieter-Annandale explained to the Herald he is currently at Lenmed Hospital in Lenasia where he is in a stable condition. Van der Merwe has however suffered multiple injuries.

“He has almost broken every bone in his body. He broken both his legs, his pelvis, his clavicle, both his wrists and four ribs,” Potgieter-Annandale said.

On the same day of the accident they operated on him, after they picked up that he had internal bleeding. On Monday, 28 March, they removed the ventilators.

He sustained no injuries to his brain.

This is going to be a long road to recovery.

“On Monday he woke up, but had tremendous pain.”

According to Potgieter-Annandale, van der Merwe was on his way back from work on a mine in Carletonville that day at around 5am. He phoned his family to say he is leaving work, but at 8am there still was no sign of van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe’s son took a drive on the Randfontein road to see if he could not find his father. When he returned home, the family was informed of his accident.
