Homemade firearm found at hostel

Police: Any person found in possession of such firearm will be arrested and prosecuted.

A routine intelligence gathering by the Randfontein Police in the Mohlakeng area recently yielded unexpected results.

“It is alleged by the police officers that they were gathering information and following up on leads when they stopped on the corner or Diale and Ngqonyela Streets in Mohlakeng. They saw a group of approximately four to six men sitting along a wall at Madala Hostel. The men allegedly jumped up and started running away,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

Ernst continued, “This behaviour was suspicious and the police officers decided to investigate the place where the men fled from. The officers found a home made firearm behind the wall on the ground. Although no arrests were affected on the day, the members’ instinct paid off.”

It is illegal to be in possession of any firearm, whether commercially produced or home made.

Any person found in possession of such firearm will be arrested and prosecuted. The Station Commander, Brigadier Manamela congratulated the officers who were responsible for this find.

“Your proactive intervention ensured that one less firearm is in the hands of the criminals. Keep up the good work.”
