There’s a number plate on my stoep

An alleged drunk driver drove through a fence and left his number plate and the owner traced it.

To his surprise resident Pottie Potgieter discovered his fence had been damaged and car parts and a number plate were laying in his yard in Dennydale.

On Saturday afternoon 5 March, while most of Randfontein was enjoying the Randfontein Show, one motorist, according to Potgieter, was enjoying a few drinks before driving through Potgieter’s fence.

Potgieter said his son, 13, discovered a car had rammed through their fence before speeding off.

Potgieter’s plot is surrounded by two fences as pesky donkeys in the area used to come too close to his donkeys. The car that had crashed into his property went through both fences, taking out four thick wooden poles holding it up.

To repair the fence would cost me about R6 000 in wire because I would have to rewire the entire fence.

“If I were to work two whole days to fix the fence, I might be finished – and that’s if my son helps me. Who has two whole days just to fix a fence?”

To the dismay of the driver who drove through Potgieter’s fence, he traced the number plate.

“The only thing I want is for the driver to apologise to me or at least offer to fix the fence. If he had come to me that afternoon and just say sorry, we wouldn’t have been here right now,” Potgieter said.

He is looking at opening a case at the Randfontein Police for reckless driving.
