Young champs exceed expectations

Baobab Athletics Club: We do not compete, we lead.

Two athletes from the Baobab Athletics Club have qualified to represent the club, their schools and the town of Mohlakeng at a big athletics meet in the Eastern Cape.

Bokang ‘Lagat’ Mabote (u/11) and Buhle Ndlovu (u/10) from the club participated in the Gauteng Primary Schools Track and Field Championships on 26 and 27 February at the Ruimsig Stadium.

Lagat took gold in the 1200 metre race. He competed for Sedimosang Primary School.

Early last year Lagat took part in the South African Schools Athletics (SASA) meet at the Germiston Athletics Stadium and took silver in the long distance event.

His time, three minutes and 50,70 seconds broke a provincial record in the boys u/10 group.

Buhle ran the 80 metre as well the 100 metre sprint at the Gauteng Championships. He came third in the 80 metre and fourth in the 100 metre sprints. Buhle ran for Avanté Primary School.

Chairperson of the Baobab Athletics Club, Ofentse Ntibane said the club is growing from strength to strength.

Their motto is,

We do not compete, we lead.”

Ntibane said the club is steadily growing in numbers. The club currently has over 32 athletes.

They have now also gained access to the main field in the Mohlakeng Stadium for practices.

While the club is functioning relatively smoothly, Ntibane said that some of the athletes he coaches are not able to afford transport, food and accommodation when participating competitions outside the West Rand.

Some of these children’s parents cannot afford these things and then the kids can’t compete.

“If there are any businesses who would like to sponsor some of our top athletes or donate anything to the club, it would be much appreciated,” Ntibane said.

They welcome members of the public including the elderly and disabled residents to join their club. Their practices are on Mondays and Fridays.
