10 rounds and counting

A local boxer received a trophy for being boxer of the year for the past 10 years.

Hardus Jacobs, a local boxer is making headlines once again, this time for being the best boxer at the Randgate Boxing Club for 10 years running.

The trophy comes from his father Jan had told him years ago that should he be named Boxer of the Year a few years in a row he would have a trophy made for him if he ever hits the 10-year mark.

Lo and behold, Hardus managed to be the best 10 years in a row. When the Herald asked him how it felt always to be the best and he said he’s almost used to it, if he could be that bold.

“It’s nothing, really. I just get in the ring and do my thing,” he said.

Hardus, soon to be 17, is a Grade 11 pupil at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen and is almost at the age where he needs to decide what he wants to do for a living. He told the Herald he would like to be a police detective.

I want to catch the bad guys. The really bad ones,” he joked and said he’ll box them when he gets his hands on them.

Jan described his son as being no trouble at all as a child. He said Hardus still likes to walk around barefoot and climb trees. “Do you know what the worst punishment is to Hardus? Wearing shoes to school,” Jan joked.

Hardus is nothing less than a gentleman and never lets his success in the ring get the better of him. Jan said Hardus takes boxing very seriously and that he would like to make a career of it as well, if he could manage it.

Criteria for the decade trophy:

• 95 per cent attendance of which Hardus has 98 per cent

• More than 30 fights

• Participated on national level

• Boxer of the Year more than 10 times

His school described him as being a good sportsman, mature, respectful and disciplined. The Herald has seen Hardus’ boxing career going from strength to strength. Through the years he has won various competitions, fights and medals.

Hardus currently has his sights set on being part of the team that will be touring Russia. This can happen only if Hardus gets gold in the South African Boxing Championships, which should go smoothly considering his skill in the ring.
