Rape victims assisted by innovative women

The handbags will be handed out to victims of rape in the Krugersdorp Cluster.

Five women, two of them former Laerskool Rapportryer staff members and three of them current staff members at the school came up with a great initiative to give a little comfort to rape victims.

The idea for the initiative came when in January they heard about 10 handbags with female products being handed out to rape victims.

The women are Sanette Venter, Annelie Hefer, Jannelie van Aswegen, Trudi du Plessis and Louise van Heerden who realised that other women could benefit from all their unused handbags and put it to use.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, supports the project. She said, “An innovative group of women in the Randfontein/ Krugersdorp area started a project to assist rape victims. All the women indicated they had a few handbags, still in a good condition, taking up space in their cupboards. They came up with a brilliant idea to address their problem while assisting those in need.

The women prepare a comfort bag, containing items that a female might use, such as deodorant, hand wash, wet towels, tissues and underwear. The comfort bag is placed inside a beautiful handbag.

“This will be handed out to victims of rape in the Krugersdorp Cluster. The Randfontein Police applauds these women for their initiative to comfort victims. Captain Paula Terblanche, an investigator at the Krugersdorp FCS, said this will go a long way in giving a rape victim back some dignity after the ordeal she had to face.”
