Trials going well at Mapogo Teine

Approximately 60 players battled it out to be in the first team.

A large group of players from all over the West Rand recently participated in trials in order to stand a chance in being selected for the Mapogo Teine’s first team for the 2016 season.

It is said approximately 60 players arrived which is a big improvement compared to 2015.

Johan Cronje from Mapogo Security said last year they could barely make two full teams but this year they have over 60 players which means they will easily make up three teams.

Men from all ages and walks of life took to the field that particular day in a few trial rugby matches. Trials are no ordinary games, this is a chance players have to show selectors and coaches what they are made of.

Two players in particular stole the show and selectors quickly scribbled notes next to their names.

The two players were Rikus Kruger who managed a try early into the trials and who made a near clean run before scoring. Kruger’s speed and agility was almost that of Itu Mpete who made a few runs for the line but inches away, he was taken out. During his third run with ball during trials, he saw a gap and ran straight for the line almost tasting the sweet try and all his teammates and supporters cheering him on from the sideline when he was tackled all the way off the sideline injuring his shoulder, fortunately not seriously.

The selections should happen in the week of 8 to 12 February, Jannie van Loggerenberg said.
