Brandvlei horror crash: Bühner’s legacy lives on

Nic Diederichs Technical High School achieve 100 percent matric pass rate despite a dark year.

The passing of Günther Bühner, former principal of Hoërskool Riebeeckrand (Rierand) and principal of Nic Diederichs Technical High School at the time of his death shook Randfontein and Krugersdorp alike.

Bühner tragically passed away in a horror crash in Brandvlei in June last year. Bühner, his girlfriend Jackie Alberts and Alberts’ daughter Alandri, 5, died in the crash.

The only two survivors were Luan, Alberts’ son, and Janè, Bühner’s daughter. According to Chris Botha, spokesperson for Netcare 911, “Six people in total died and three people sustained life-threatening injuries while one was in a serious condition. Some of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle and were found several metres away.”

Bühner and Alberts were in a Cross Polo on the N14 near the Brandvlei intersection when a 1 series BMW crashed into them head-on. The BMW caught fire.

Nic Diederichs Technical High School was among those hardest hit by the loss of a teacher, a friend and a father figure as well as the head of their school whose responsibilities are to make sure the school functions optimally.

The difficult year the school experienced had a light at the end of the tunnel. On Friday 29 January during the West Rand Top Achiever’s Awards event, Nic Diederichs received an award, against all odds, for their 100 per cent matric pass rate.

Even the programme director, Max Maxeke specifically mentioned this great achievement despite such a dark time. When a representative of the school stood up to collect the award, the standing ovation the school received was just a small token from the crowd to show their appreciation and respect.

It is evident Bühner left a legacy at the school and some would even say in spirit he is still with the school.
