Allen’s flowers brightens Randgate

'God blessed me with my flower business.'

Allen Moyo – who has been selling flowers on Union Street in Randgate for the eighth consecutive year – is the name behind the familiar flower vendor.

Allen started his own flower business straight after school – it is his way of earning a living.

Now, at the age of 26, he is able to look after his wife and four-year-old child with this little business he loves. Allen’s day normally starts at 10am and ends at 5pm. He says he normally sells between seven to nine bunches of flowers a day and that white residents supports him the most.

Allen says his customers are normally middle-aged people – 50 percent male and 50 percent female. Allen himself has his favourite flower, which is red roses. Allen says he does not get influenced by crime as nobody has ever tried to rob him or steal his flowers.

Allen says, “When I was young, I wanted to be a businessman. Now God blessed me with my flower business.”

Once a week, Allen goes to Johannesburg town and Krugersdorp with his bakkie to buy his flowers for the week. His secret for keeping the flowers fresh, is simply mixing Domestos or Jik with water and ice. When asked what the down side of his work is, he said smiling, “I do not even see a down side.”

Allen is also in possession of a working permit for working on the street, which makes his life a lot easier. He loves this community as everybody is always kind to him and also looks after him.
