JUST IN: Mother who murdered twin sons convicted

Police: She was found guilty on two counts of murder and she was sentenced to six years imprisonment on both cases.

The Herald reported on an alleged murder case in April last year where a mother poisoned her twin sons and recently, the mother was convicted of murder and was given six years imprisonment on both charges.

Last year the Herald spoke to Cronic Mmolaeng,  father of the twins who said,

The night before she was praying and she was saying painful things about ending her life and taking the children with her. I was really worried about her and I asked her why she was saying these things because it was not the first time that she had said these things.”

Conversely, Mmolaeng added his wife was jolly the next morning before the tragedy.

“She even called me at work to ask how I was. That was around 8am,” he said.

“Later in the day I received an SMS from her saying that she is tired and that she is going to end her life and take the children with her,” Mmolaeng said.

After the SMS was sent, Mmolaeng was notified by a neighbour that his wife had poisoned their children with rat poison and was told to rush home immediately.

The mother also ingested some of the poison in an alleged attempt to take her own life.

“When I got home, I saw one of the children laying on the bed already passed away and then the other laying helpless,” he said.

According to Constable Lucky Matombe, spokesperson for  the Tarlton Police, “It is also alleged the mother tried to take her life by stabbing herself several times in her upper body in the presence of the police.

“One of the officers tried to take the knife away from her but unfortunately she got injured during the process and was taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention.”

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson added Sibongile Mthebu, 33, the accused’s case was concluded in the Palm Ridge High Court last Monday (25 January). She was found guilty on two counts of murder and she was sentenced to six years imprisonment on both cases.

Judge Mabisele presided over the case and advocate Marriot prosecuted on behalf of the state. The sentences will  run concurrently which means she will only serve six of the 12 years.

“The Randfontein Management wishes to congratulate warrant officer Karen Nel with the conviction since she spent numerous hours, even days without any rest to investigate and prepare the case for court. The member’s perseverance in finalising the matter in a professional way is commended,” Ernst said.
