Voting correctly – What you should know

The DA Ward 7 team went from house-to-house to ensure residents' details were correct.

The DA Ward 7 team went from house-to-house in Eikepark over the weekend (end of January) to make sure residents’ information for voting is correct and if they are registered to vote at the correct venue for the upcoming municipal elections.

The team which was headed-up by Ward 7 Councillor, Craig Harrison set up their temporary base in front of a home in Jan Fiskaal Street. The owner of the home welcomed the group with open arms to set their tent, laptop and chairs up on her front lawn.

A significant amount of residents passing by stopped at the tent to check if they were registered, if their information was correct and if they are registered to vote at the correct venue.

The team used the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) website and phone application to check residents’ details. Not only Councillors have access to this, residents can visit the website or application themselves on www.elections.org.za and go to my voter registration details. The application can also be downloaded from the website.

All that is required to check your registration details is your ID number. It then provides you with the name and address of your voting station as well as other details.

The team later split up to tackle the rest of the area’s residents. Craig Harrison along with Willie Brits, a DA Ward 7 member embarked on their voter registration walk in Hoepoe and Con Joubert Streets. The other teams were dispatched to various complexes in the area.

“We decided to do this area first because of all the complexes here. You can get a lot of people all at once,” Harrison said.

Harrison added they will be having more such drives in the near future to ensure voters are going to the correct venue to vote. In Harrison’s wards which includes Eikepark, Helikon Park, Culemborg Park and a portion of Homelake, residents are required to vote at Westcol College and Hoërskool Riebeeckrand.

Helikon Park and Eikepark residents are to vote at Westcol and Homelake Extension one (from Ewart Street down towards Foodcorp) and Culemborg Park are to vote at Hoërskool Riebeeckrand.

All residents must be registered in the wards they stay in because they are electing their ward Councillors in this year’s election,” Harrison said.

If your area’s ward councillor has not paid you a visit, yet, make sure new members of your household who are of age are registered to vote, that your details are correct, and that your voting venue is correct.
