Randfontein post office a dump

Supervisor: The outside was last cleaned a year ago.

After numerous complaints from the public, the Herald paid a visit to the Randfontein Post Office situated in Stubb Street on Wednesday 20 January.

It turned out to be a rude awakening.

The Herald spoke to the supervisor, Agnes Morunkgomo who admitted that Randfontein residents have been complaining about the state of the post office and its premises for some time.

The last time she remembered the outside being cleaned was about a year ago. She referred the Herald to the area manager, Mervin Prins for comment.

“We are well aware of the situation but the property and infrastructure division of the regional office are in control of the outside maintenance.

The contractors that worked on the premises failed to finish their work when the Post Office crisis happened. The Post Office industry is battling financially and sometimes there simply are no funds,” Prins said.

It became clear to the Herald that not only the residents were complaining but even car guards. Bruce Geland and Denzel April said even they have been asking for the grass to be cut and general maintenance to be done around the building.

They too recalled the last time anybody cleaned around the post office was more than a year ago and that the public is up in arms.

Residents also expressed their disgust. “This place looks terrible,” said Daisy Zwane. Another resident, Bahuahan Kay said, “This is very very bad” and Dries van Zyl commented, “That kakiebos is growing into a tree”.

According to Rynhard Hendrikse, “This is terrible and the systems do not even work”.

A woman who wished to remain anonymous said, “This place used to be in a perfect condition, now it looks like a rubbish dump. The queues are very long and they should have notice board to inform you which till to use for your specific needs.”

The outside is not the only problem. The inside where the post boxes are, is littered with paper and other refuse the wind had blown in through the broken windows.

Geland and April said they are more then willing to accept the “tender or contract” to clean up Randfontein’s post office.
