Mayoral bursaries a boost for youth

'Whoever benefits from the bursary scheme will plough back the knowledge acquired to our communities.'

Randfontein Local Municipality (RLM) is once again granting the youth of the greater Randfontein a chance to maximize their potential and make it possible for underprivileged children to further their studies with the Mayoral Bursary 2016.

“This initiative, that started in 2009, is to empower the youth, that is in need, as we strongly believe that the future of our town lies in their hands. By doing so, we are of the view that whoever benefits from the bursary scheme will plough back the knowledge acquired to our communities,” said Thabiso Makhetha, Mayoral Bursary Awards 2016 coordinator.

Makhetha continued, “RLM realized that our town is in short of certain valuable skills that can assist in boosting the economic viability of our town, hence we have prioritised certain careers. The fields of study targeted are – Civil Engineering; Town Planning; Commerce; HR Management.

“The bursary covers tuition fees and prescribed textbooks. The first lot to ever benefit from the Mayor’s Bursary funds for the year 2010 were ten lucky students, who are doing exceptional well in their studies.”

The municipality anticipate more responses this year, as there are more awareness surrounding the bursaries available.

This is one of Mayor Mzi Khumalo’s favourite projects, because it is an initiative that helps individuals to gain access to quality education.

RLM acknowledges its socio-economic responsibility and they believe that should they get it right in education they will be able to deal effectively with the social ills such as AIDS, poverty, crime, teenage pregnancy and substance abuse facing their community.
