An ATM robber finally caught

Two Mapogo officers finally arrested a suspect that has been terrorising ATM-using residents in Greenhills.

2016 marks the year an ATM robber finally was got caught in the act on Thursday morning in Greenhills.

Yvonne Mitchell, the victim, was using the First National Bank (FNB) ATM when a suspect approached her offering to help. He told her she was doing something wrong.

She said the suspect took her card and later put a coin where the ATM card should go. Mitchell, shocked by the experience did not even realise she didn’t have her card anymore.

The woman Mitchell was with asked her whether the suspect didn’t take her card and only then did she realise what was happening. She said the suspect was just about to get into the car – a white Toyota – that already had occupants in it when he was caught.

The suspect later was caught and Mapogo Security arrived on scene to arrest the suspect. The entire tale ended at the Sasol garage on Kenneth Road, Greenhills. Mapogo reaction officers Marius Nienaber and William Brooks arrested the suspect.

Last year, the Herald reported on two ATM robberies in the Greenhills circle. One was a 71-year-old man who was robbed of R10 000.

The other was a 43-year-old man who was held up at gunpoint at an ATM in the Greenhills circle. The Randfontein Police also have released various statements regarding ATM safety.
