14 Injured, 10 critical in taxi accident

'It is understood that the driver of the taxi allegedly lost control.'

Fourteen people sustained various injuries when a taxi crashed down an embankment along the Wedela road in Carletonville on Friday afternoon.

At approximately 3.30pm paramedics arrived on the scene where they found several people that were ejected from the taxi. Two people were still severely trapped in the vehicle. Fire fighters had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to free the two trapped occupants.

Ten of the injured sustained critical injuries. Majority of the people ejected from the taxi sustained severe fractures and lacerations.

ER24’s medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift one of the critically injured.

It is understood that the driver of the taxi allegedly lost control near one of the traffic circles resulting in the taxi to veer off the road and overturn several times.

Local authorities attended the incident.
