New Measles vaccine on the horizon

This new vaccine cannot be co-administered with other childhood vaccines.

Sister Rianie Grové from Randgate pharmacy said a new measles (Measbio) vaccine will be replacing the current Rouvax vaccine in November.

The Department of Health said there will be a change in the route of administration since Sanofi Pasteur, the current supplier of the Measles vaccine has ceased the production of their Measles vaccine, Rouvax, and supplies of this will be running out in December.

Biovac Institute has registered a new Measles vaccine (Measbio) with MCC in South Africa which will be distributed to healthcare facilities from November.

This newly registered Measles vaccine can only be administered under the skin and cannot be co-administered with other childhood vaccines.

The needles for this vaccine are expected to be available from December. All facilities are urged to start administering Measbio from 1 December and parents should insure that their child receives the Measbio vaccine.

The new EPI Schedule as of 1 December is available on the website www.amayeza-info.co.za
