UPDATE: Elderly woman dies after R28 accident

'It looked as if a doll was being flung from the car.'

Martie Krause, 67, sadly passed away after the vehicle she drove had rolled on the R28 a week ago.

Johan Krause, Martie’s husband told the Herald what really happened that fateful morning (Friday 30 October).

Stefan Herbst was travelling behind Martie when suddenly he saw a big cloud of dust in front of him. He said then it looked as if a doll was being flung from the car in front of him. That doll, said Johan, was his beloved wife. Herbst rushed to Martie where she was laying 23 feet from her vehicle.

Martie told him her name and said she had severe back pain. Herbst then moved her slowly and she said it felt better.

Martie then grabbed Herbst by his ankle and he said he saw fear in her eyes. Herbst’s friend, Harry Collins assisted him by looking for contact numbers or addresses in Martie’s handbag since she could not remember her husband’s telephone number.

After finding a municipal bill one of them informed Johan about his wife’s accident. Johan immediately went to the accident scene and spoke to his wife. The Randfontein Fire Brigade was on the scene first followed by Netcare 911. Quick Response Services (QRS) also assisted.

Initially it was believed that family members were in the vehicle in front of her and that she only sustained minor injuries, but Johan said that was not the case.

It is believed that for reasons unknown Martie had lost control of the vehicle and ended up on the side of the road. She was airlifted to Netcare Milpark Hospital by helicopter for further medical care. Sadly later the day, at 5pm Martie passed away as a result of the multiple blunt-force injuries she had sustained.

An emotional Johan said,

I just want to thank the two angels (Herbst and Collins) that stood by my wife and supported her in every way they could. I will be grateful for their help forever and I am so thankful that she was not alone in those moments.”
