Where have all the stop signs gone?

'If you don't know Randfontein well then you could find yourself in an accident' – Councillor.

Stop streets and road markings in Greenhills are virtually non-existent and the ward councillor of the area has drawn the line.

DA ward councillor and chairperson of the DA West Rand, Evert du Plessis took the Herald on a tour of Greenhills and pointed out there are various streets that do not have stop signs or markings.

The Herald counted 10 missing stop signs, two graffitied signs and more than 10 faded stop markings.

Du Plessis said the street markings desperately need to be redone because people do not know where there is a stop sign and where there isn’t.

If you don’t know Randfontein well then you could find yourself in an accident like the ones that have recently happened in Greenhills,” he said.

The Herald has reported on two collisions in Greenhills in the last few weeks that have happened as a result of a missing stop street and faded stop markings. In one of the collisions, a bakkie rolled onto a cyclist and in the other, one car T-boned the other.

Du Plessis is urging the community of Greenhills and the greater Randfontein to report any person stealing a street sign to the police and the Randfontein Local Municipality.

He said the signs are not just a municipal issue where the municipality does not replace the signs, people vandalise the signs or steal them.

I’m not sure if people are stealing them to sell them. You can get money for just about any kind of metal these days,” he said.

These are not the only municipal signs that are missing in Randfontein – Ellik De Lange, PR councillor for ward 5 told the Herald last month that street names were disappearing in his ward.

So far, the Randfontein Local Municipality has responded to one of the complaints about the stop signs and replaced the one on the Lark Crescent and Kanfer Street following the T-bone collision on the very same corner.
