Boerbul attacks SPCA inspector

WARNING: Image may be disturbing to sensitive viewers.

Randfontein and Westonaria SPCA’s number-one inspector escaped with her life after an angry boerbul attacked and dragged her for approximately 20 metres.

The incident occurred at the end of last month. The inspector, Janette Muller, said she is lucky to be alive. She believes she owes her life to the Randfontein Community Policing Forum (CPF). Muller spoke to the Herald after being discharged from hospital.

“It was the day after we received the dog food donation. I had an appointment to move a dog from one property to another,” she said.

She said she got to the property and found that the dog she would be transporting was a boerbul.

I didn’t know that it was a boerbul. I still asked the owners if I needed to bring someone with to contain the dog and they said it was not necessary and they would help.”

Muller believes the owners had given the dog a tranquilliser. “What happens with these calming tablets for dogs is that sometimes it does the opposite of what it is supposed to do.”

Muller explained the dog seemed aggressive but the owners said it should be fine to transport.

I tried to get the dog in the van by using a catch pole. I stood on the gate trying to lure the dog to the catch pole when it pushed over the gate. He also pushed me to the ground.”

Muller said the dog got hold of her arm and dragged her approximately 20 metres.

Two women saw what was happening and pulled the dog off Muller by the collar. She made a dash for the SPCA van. She said the women who helped her also got bitten.

The woman who pulled the dog off me crawled back into the house and luckily closed the safety gate just in time. She had blood on her hand. The other woman was bitten in the leg.”

Muller called Nattilly van der Westhuizen from the Randfontein Sector 4 CPF who she said arrived on the scene within minutes.

“The CPF members were like a family to me at that moment. They arrived on scene and before they took me to hospital, Louise van Wyk, also a CPF member, dressed my wounds as best she could and gave me something to calm me. Nattilly called all the other members of the CPF to block the roads so that we could get to hospital quickly.”

Van der Westhuizen later visited Muller in hospital.

“The CPF did more than just take me to hospital, they also followed up on how I was doing.”
