Lack of traffic signs causes huge accident

'We have contacted the municipality several times regarding this issue.'

The Randfontein Local Municipality – not reckless driving – has been blamed for the chaos on the corner of Lark Crescent and Kanfer Street after two vehicles were involved in a T-bone collision.

The incident occurred on Monday evening (19 October). A woman drove the BMW and the occupant of the other vehicle involved in the collision was a man.

Those involved argue that at this intersection the faded white lines are not visible on the road and there is no stop sign in sight.

The Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF) members explained to the Herald they received a call at approximately 7.20pm that an ambulance was required urgently on this corner.

When they arrived on the scene, somebody already was giving the occupants of the vehicle emergency medical treatment. Laurens Coetzer from the Sector 4 CPF contacted the ambulance and it arrived shortly thereafter.

The BMW was heading up Kanfer Street when the driver failed to notice the stop street ahead and then crossed Lark Crescent. She T-boned the other vehicle and both crashed into a palisade fence.

The woman was taken from the scene in a car while the man was transported to Lenmed Hospital by ambulance. The woman’s condition is unknown, but the man sustained serious facial injuries.

There seems to be no evidence of reckless driving as the cause of the collision, but it is evident that the lack of a stop sign and faded road markings, hardly visible at night, have made this intersection a potential accident hot spot.

We have contacted the municipality several times regarding this issue, but nothing ever gets done,” Liz Dorling, a furious resident of Lark Crescent said.

The chances of this accident occurring could have been reduced significantly if the traffic sign was in place and the white lines were visible clearly.

The Herald has brought this incident to the attention of the Randfontein Local Municipality and is awaiting response from Tshidiso Tlharipe, spokesperson for the Executive Mayor.
