Fish dying in local pond

The Randfontein Local Municipality will only act if it can be proven that they are responsible for the contamination of the pond.

Another water contamination scandal has surfaced in Randfontein.

DA local Ward Councilor Sina Erasmus is up in arms and fuming over the contaminated water, which has apparently caused many fish in a Wilbotsdal pond, to die.

She says that this could be caused by feces but cannot confirm this at this point.

“At this point I cannot make concrete assumptions as to what may be wrong with the water but I can assure you that something is wrong.

“I have been called by residents on numerous occasions alleging that fish in the dam are dying,” says Erasmus.

She adds that she recently visited to the dam to investigate the claims and says that much to her surprise, the allegations were confirmed.

Erasmus says that she reported the matter to the Randfontein Local Municipality and was told that she should rather approach the Department of Water Affairs to investigate her claims..

“I will be meeting with a representative from the Department of Water Affairs, who will test the water to determine the cause of the fidh dying.

“It is only then that the council will be prepared to discuss this matter further,” says Erasmus.
