Crime stats: Murder up

Murder in R'fontein has gone up and rape has come down.

They say ignorance is bliss but would you not want to know what crimes occur most frequently right under your nose?

Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko reported on South Africa’s crime statistics for the April 2014 to March 2015 period.

The most notable is that murder increased during that period and Gauteng reported the highest percentage of this increase – a 10,2 per cent increase in murders since the previous period of April 2013 to March 2014. The number of incidents rose from 2 690 to 2 965.


In Randfontein, the number of murders increased to 31 compared to last year’s 29. Rape statistics show a decease from 79 to 68.


Despite the growing concerns about house and business robberies in Randfontein, statistics show no changed since last year, amounting to an average of 62 incidents.

Business robberies in town have dropped from 63 to 36 cases.

Contact crimes (crimes against a person):
• Murder – 29 in 2013/14 and 31 in 2014/15
• Rape (attempts included) – 79 in 2013/14 and 68 in 2014/15
• Attempted murder – 30 in 2013/14 and 17 in 2014/15
• Assault GBH – 519 in 2013/14 and 544 in 2014/15
• Common assault – 633 in 2013/14 and 598 in 2014/15
• Total robbery (aggravating) – 402 in 2013/14 and 347 in 2014/15
• Total common robbery – 95 in 2013/14 and 124 in 2014/15
• Sexual assault – 12 in 2013/14 and 9 in 2014/15
• Sexual offences – 5 in 2013/14 and 2 in 2014/15
• Total contact crimes: 1 804 in 2013/15 and 1 740 in 2014/15

Contact related crimes:
• Arson – 519 in 2013/14 and 544 in 2014/15
• Malicious damage to property – 410 in 2013/14 and 426 in 2014/15
• Total contact-related crimes: – 420 in 2013/14 and 440 in 2014/15

Property related crimes:
• Total of burglary at residential premises (attempts included) – 837 in 2013/14 and 635 in 2014/15
• Total of burglary at business premises (attempts included) – 152 in 2013/14 and 192 in 2014/15
•Total of theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles (attempts included) – 317 in 2013/14 and 228 in 2014/15
• Total theft out of or from motor vehicles (attempts included) – 383 in 2013/14 and 379 in 2014/15
• Stock theft – 19 in 2013/14 and 11 in 2014/15
• Total property-related crimes: – 1 708 in 2013/14 and 1 445 in 2014/15

Other serious crimes:
• Total of other theft (attempts included) – 1 065 in 2013/14 and 1 190 in 2014/15
• Commercial crime – 112 in 2013/14 and 105 in 2014/15
• Shoplifting – 257 in 2013/14 and 230 in 2014/15
• Total other serious crimes – 1 444 in 2013/14 and 1 525 in 2014/15
• Crimes heavily dependent on police action for detection:
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition – 44 in 2013/14 and 18 in 2014/15
• Drug-related crimes – 307 in 2013/14 and 304 in 2014/15
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – 117 in 2013/14 and 107 in 2014/15
• Total crimes heavily dependent on police action for detection – 468 in 2013/14 and 429 in 2014/15

Sub-categories of robbery aggravated (already accounted for under robbery aggravating) excluding attempts:
• Carjacking – 59 in 2013/14 and 56 in 2014/15
• Truck hijacking – 8 in 2013/14 and 8 in 2014/15
