Anyone for a beer festival?

Public reminded of at least three different festivals around the country.

Festival-goers and lager lovers are once again in for a treat as this year’s Tops at Spar Bierfest (Durban at Suncoast – 4 to 5 September; Johannesburg at Montecasino 9 to 11 October and 16 to 17 October; Cape Town at Newlands Brewery 6 to 8 November November) gear up to take visitors on a taste-shaping, froth-making journey of discovery with a superb selection of brews from presenting partner and specialty beer brand No 3. Fransen Street.

This year’s Bierfest attendees have a lot to look forward to says Fransen Street specialty brewer Warren Wiese, with the brewery’s three small-batch brands delicious Cream Ale – a mild and refreshing beer with a medium finish and delicious toffee flavours; a traditional Krystal Weiss wheat beer with its refreshingly different, lightly sour banana and clove character, as well as the pert Red Ale of Irish origin, sporting a rich, candy, caramel malt flavour.

No. 3 Fransen Street Master Brewers will also be bringing fans the long-time favourite and limited edition Bavarian-styled Royal Bavaria Oktoberfest Bier.

The brewery’s philosophy has always been to uniquely craft each specialty beer style, batch by batch, one at a time from start to end and this is a tradition that our master brewers continue to pride themselves upon,” says Warren.

Launched 16 years ago by South African Breweries (SAB) as a special development brewery – the Fransen Street brewery, a testing centre for new products and raw materials, produced small-scale runs of special interest beers. Four products were initially taken to market; a wheat beer, ginger beer and winter and India pale ales – but were ahead of their time.

In 2012, however, SAB was encouraged by the global and local growth in specialty and craft beers and subsequently redeveloped the Fransen Street Brewery, taking it back to its original intentions and creating something of a lager laboratory where experienced master brewers are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and create a series of individual beer styles that are brewed to be completely different.

Since then, the No 3. Fransen Street brewery has produced specialty beer styles for the Bierfest and other popular festivals, as well for consumption as select venues countrywide.

Alongside top German-inspired food, toe-tapping entertainment and heaps of hilarity plus the coolest of competitions at this year’s Tops at Spar Bierfest, Master Brewers will also be on hand to enlighten beer-curious attendees with insider info and anecdotes at Bierfest’s “Braumeister Ecke” (a.k.a Brewmasters Corner).

“We are hoping that each beer will be a discovery and an adventure,” says brand campaign manager for No. 3 Fransen, Maki Mofokeng.

We want consumers to enjoy new beer experiences by trying a wider variety of beer styles, all the while knowing that the product is backed by the expertise of SAB’s master brewers. These small batch beers are also a creative outlet for our brewing team, who are all extremely passionate about what they do,” she continues.
