Stray dog rescued

SPCA, journalist and resident rescue stray dog from speeding cars.

The SPCA, a Herald journalist and an animal-loving resident rescued a stray German Shepherd in Randgate.

A WhatsApp message came through on the Community Policing Forum (CPF) from an animal-loving resident, Juanita Erasmus, about a dog she noticed frantically roaming around in Greenhills. The resident said the dog was going to get run over by a cars in the road.

The Herald immediately called Janette Muller, inspector at the Randfontein and Westonaria SPCA to rescue the dog. Within minutes both the Herald and the SPCA was on scene to assist Erasmus.

The dog was first spotted in Stegman Street, Randgate, in a yard with an open gate. The dog proceeded up Stegman Street and later into Union Street when he disappeared without a trace.

The trio drove up an down Randgate in search of the dog when Juanita finally found him in Stegman Street where he was spotted in a yard once before. The dog was in a yard without a gate and Janette thought to park her van where the gate used to be. The Herald proceeded to park next to the van in a bid to prevent the dog from escaping.

When the German Shepherd saw all the movement, he ran to the side of the house where there is less than a metre’s space between the home’s walls and the outside wall.

A kennel was set up at the entrance of the small space and the man who lives in the home proceeded to get on the wall to coax the dog to climb into the kennel from behind while the Janette and the Herald held a blanket above the kennel to prevent the dog from jumping and getting away.

After a while and a great struggle put up by the dog, the deed was done and the dog was safely in the kennel to be taken to the SPCA.

Janette urges the community of Randfontein and Westonaria to follow the same process she did with the Herald and a resident.

If you can, call the SPCA immediately and keep and eye on the dog’s location so when we come out, we know where the dog is and can get the dog to safety faster.”

The dog is a full-grown German Shepherd and should any person recognise the dog, they can contact the Randfontein SPCA on 011 412 3114.
