House robberies on the increase – Police

'There is both an increase in house and business burglaries in the last month.'

Constable Lucky Matome, spokesperson for the Tarlton Police has seen an increase in house burglaries in Randfontein and in the greater West Rand. He offered some advice on how to prevent houses from being a target.

According to Matome,

There has been an increase in both house and business burglaries in the last month. We would like to warn residents against things that could compromise their safety.”

How to make your property safer:

Look out for and remove foreign objects on your property

• Ensure your property is locked properly before going to bed

• Ensure your property is numbered

• Have proper lighting on the outside of your property

What to do when going on holiday:

Notify the police and leave contact numbers in case of an emergency

• Notify neighbours and ask them to keep an eye on your property

• Lock valuables in a safe place

• If you own a gun and do not want to take it with, take it to your nearest gunsmith or to the gunsmith at your destination

Matome also gave a few tips on how to get assistance in an emergency.

Get to know your police officers; make small talk so they get to know you. There needs to be some relationship building between the police and the community. The better police know you and know where you live, the easier it is for them to respond to an emergency call at your home,” he said.

Lastly, with regard to emergency calls, Matome said, “It is important for houses especially in plot areas to be numbered correctly as it could determine the response time of emergency services or the police.”
