CWP workers caught basking in the sun

'These workers do nothing'.

An angry resident from Glenharvie approached the Herald with photographs of workers from the Community Work Programme (CWP) caught being lazy on a property.

Whether the group of workers were in fact taking a break or waiting for transport to get home is unclear at this stage.

The CWP is a South African government programme that provides an employment safety net. It supplements livelihood strategies by providing a basic level of income security through work. The programme was started to address high unemployment levels and contributes to strategic goals of government in addressing poverty and unemployment.

This seems to be contradictory to the mission. The resident asks, “How can we as residents stop these lazy CWP people from just lazing about peoples pavements, eating and leaving their rubbish all over ones pavement here in Glenharvie? They have been laying here since just before 10 am making a noise and socialising.”

She added, “When you do or say something, you get told by these workers”: It is not your property, it is mine.

She continued, “It may not be our property, but we do pay rent, water and lights and we do pay for a garden service.”

“These people do nothing in Glenharvie.”

The Herald contacted the Westonaria Local Municipality to comment on the matter.
