SPCA cries for help

The Randfontein and Westonaria SPCA‘s are appealing to the community for help to keep their facilities in good running order.

The Herald visited the Westonaria SPCA and spoke to Janette Muller, a qualified inspector for both SPCA’s. She has been working there for eight years.

Muller said at the moment both facilities need donations or items to help them upgrade their facilities.

They also need help with their bakkies as they have only two vehicles which runs between Westonaria and Randfontein.

Lucy Phillips is the owner of both SPCA’s and she financially carries these facilities all by herself.

Muller says their love for animals motivates them to carry out there work but they urge the community to do their part in looking after their animals, getting them sterilised and not getting pets when one simply can not afford it.

Muller showed the Herald one specific dog that was horrifically thin. This poor dog was picked up walking the streets of Westonaria. Luckily he is now under their care and now eats three meals a day and is doing much better.

Muller also mentioned that recently a lot of residents bring in their dogs or cats because people simply can not afford feeding and caring for them. The community should understand that in order to assist the public with this, they also need help from the community.

They also keep sick and old dogs for as long as possible and when someone comes to the SPCA to adopt a pet they pay a very reasonable amount and this price includes sterilization, injections deworming and a microchip.

Both Randfontein and Westonaria also have a second-hand shop where this, at the moment is their biggest source of income. The community is welcome to bring all items, clothing, donations to them where they can then sell these items that is no longer of value to a person.

The SPCA will be hosting a Doggiewalk in October where the community can bring their own dogs, enjoy the day with them but most importantly it will be a walk against animal cruelty.
