Rubbish dump becomes playground

How could parents allow their children to play there?

A concerned resident in Verlatenspoor Street in Glenharvie complained to the Herald about children playing among the rubbish at a waste container near his house.

The person who wishes to remain anonymous explained to the Herald he has been chasing away scores of children from the rubbish. Considering this being a decent area, he can not believe parents do not teach their children basic life skills.

He even asked the children if they were hungry, to which they replied “No”. He said numerous people walk past the container but simply ignore the children playing there, not even warning them against the dangers of playing in such an unhealthy environment. They do not realise they could fall ill and infect others at school and at home.

They also could injure themselves or worse – they could fall victim to kidnapping. He is also very concerned and upset about parents leaving children as young as four years old to wander the streets alone.

“Parents should be reminded this is negligence and does not speak of good parenting. In South Africa we simply can not allow our children to become vulnerable targets,” the concerned resident added.

The Herald will approach the relevant ward councillor to ask his advice about the way forward.
