Randgate collision: elderly man arrested

Alleged drunk driver to appear in court on Monday (1 June).

A 63-year-old man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of liquor and reckless/ negligent driving following a three vehicle collision in Randgate on Friday (29 May) police confirmed.

The collision occurred on the corner of van Devender and Malan Streets in Randgate. Three vehicles were damaged however, only one of the vehicles was heavily damaged.

It has been alleged that a red car overtook a white car on Malan Street when a blue combi turned into Malan from van Devender Street and collided head-on with the overtaking red car. The bumper of the red car could still be seen stuck onto the combi even after the car was towed away due to the force of the impact.

Quick Response Services (QRS), the Fire Department, as well as a provincial ambulance were on scene but luckily there were no injuries.

“The police responded and found one of the drivers to be intoxicated,” Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein police confirmed said.

The 63-year-old man who was arrested for driving under the influence and reckless/ negligent driving will appear in the Randfontein Magistrates Court on Monday (1 June).
