Elderly woman robbed when giving directions

Woman warns community about incident. You too can be fooled...

Two weeks after an elderly woman’s handbag was stolen when she was asked for directions, some of her valuables were returned to her.

The contents returned to the elderly woman, Lettie Swanepoel included two packs of photos costing over R1 000. According to Swanepoel, she went to get her mail at the post boxes at the Greenhills Pick ‘n Pay on Greenhills Avenue.

She said she got out of her car with her small dog to get her mail but left her car unlocked. A man allegedly walked up to her asking for directions to a high school in the area.

Swanepoel, who has only been living in Randfontein for a year said she told the man that she did not know where the school was.

The man allegedly kept talking to her and rattled off various street names which Swanepoel did not know. The man eventually walked off. When Swanepoel got back into her car, she realised that her handbag was no longer there.

She searched Pick ‘n Pay and around her car for her bag when she came to the conclusion that the man who spoke to her was working with another man who allegedly opened her door and snatched her back when she was not looking.

“I just want to warn people about this kind of thing. They need to be more vigilant. Car doors should always be locked. I lost things very dear to me in my handbag that I will never get back,” Swanepoel said.

The photos which were returned to Swanepoel was found by a teacher of Randfontein High School (RHS) on the school premises.

Though Swanepoel is glad the photos were returned to her, she is hazy on what to do with the photos as she had them developed for a second time because she didn’t think she would see the initial set she developed ever again.
