Murderer, 25, jailed for life

Randfontein police use forensics to bring murderer to justice.

A suspect was brought to book by the Randfontein police and Randfontein Magistrates Court for the murder of Ahmed Sharif, a business owner.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein police, a robbery took place in Mohlakeng on 11 August 2012 at approximately 8.15pm.

“Three suspects entered a tuck shop on Mahuma Street and demanded money. When the owner did not respond immediately, one of the suspects took out a firearm and shot the tuck shop owner in the chest. The suspects then fled the scene,” Ernst explained.

Sharif tragically passed away two days later (13 August) due to the injuries he sustained during the robbery. The Randfontein police then investigated a case of murder and attempted robbery.

“During September, 2012 the West Rand flying squad arrested a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and during their investigation it was found that it was the same firearm used in the murder,” Ernst said.

Later, with regards to the murder case of Sharif, forensic evidence and excellent investigation skills secured the arrest and conviction of 25-year-old Lennox Mpti. He was sentenced to life on the charge of murder. In addition to this, he got a sentence of 15 years for attempted robbery and 20 years for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and lastly a five year sentence for the possession of ammunition.

A 22-year-old Jack Mathule who was in possession of the firearm and linked to the murder also was found guilty for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and was sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Ernst continued “The Randfontein police management congratulate the investigating officer, Warrant officer Santie le Roux-Laufs for the dedication and commitment during the investigation.

“The National Prosecuting authority is also commended for the efforts that they made in this case. Adv Rampyapedi was prosecuting on behalf of the state and Adv Matshekge was the defence council. Honourable Judge A J Hiemstra presided.”
