Transport Minister on Joburg train crash

'Board of inquiry set-up to investigate the root cause of the incident'.

The Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family of the Metrorail security guard, Tiisetso Napo who died in a Metrorail train collision in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Minister Peters equally wished Marcia Sambo – who was driving the Tshwane Business Express (TBE) – for a speedy recovery at Milpark hospital.

Peters in a statement said “The Tshwane Business Express 1602 collided into the rear of Metroplus 0600 at the Denver Station in Johannesburg. Both trains were enroute to Johannesburg from Pretoria Station. Train 0600 departs from Pretoria Station at 6 am and TBE 1602 departs from Pretoria Station at 6.15am.”

At first it was reported that 80 people were injured but according to Peters “Approximately 240 Metrorail passengers were injured and are receiving the best care at Milpark hospital and Charlotte Maxheke hospital respectively. More than 120 commuters have already been attended to and discharged from Charlotte Maxeke, Milpark and Hillbrow hospitals.”

Peters added “Metrorail has set up two offices in Pretoria station and Pippet building just outside Park Station. Metrorail officers will provide assistance to settle claims and received directly with the affected commuters.

“A board of inquiry has been set-up to investigate the root cause of the incident.”
