Fists fly at boxing tourney
Randgate Boxing Club hosts spectacular boxing tournament.
Boxers came from far and wide to trade blows at the Randgate Amateur Boxing Tournament held on Saturday (18 April).
In an unfortunate turn of events, load shedding hit the Randagte Boxing Club but nothing could stop the tournament from happening – organisers managed to get a generator and hooked the lights of the boxing club up to the generator.
The tournament kicked off with the younger competitors and they came out with fists flailing left and right. Fighters were split up into two colours – red and blue.
One of the most notable fights was between Brandon Thysse from Boksburg and Sheryantaigh Koopman from Eldorado Park.
In the beginning of the fight, both came out of their corners with explosive energy and fists ready to test out carefully planned combinations.
The rounds passed and Thysse started to get the upper hand as he began to chase Koopman around the ring. Thysse managed to catch him on the back-foot on various occasions leading him straight to the ropes and the corners of the ring where rapid body blows were given.
Koopman began to falter; he started to fatigue in the ring but fought hard to stay on guard but the blows were two much for Koopman and the match was ended as a result of a technical knockout (TKO).
Due to some clubs pulling out at the last minute, most of the Randgate boxers were without fights but were awarded the opportunity to participate in sparring sessions with visiting teams.

• Hendrigh Welthagen lost against Immanual Admas from Booysens Boxing Club.
• Anele Busakwe lost against Shaheed Mulla from Lenasia South Boxing Club.
Randgate Boxing Club Special Awards:
• Hendrigh Welthagen (Boxer of the tournament).
• Harry Joubert (participated in a sparring session).
• Abel Ndava (participated in a sparring session).
The tournament was hosted by Randgate Boxing Club and they managed to organise the tournament without the help of any sponsors.
