UPDATE: ‘Community did what they could’
CPF chairperson explains how bystanders attempted to stop the blaze, but it was too late.
The community of Azaadville said they are praying for all those affected by the tragic death of a 4-year-old boy on Wednesday. He and his grandfather died after the elderly man had set alight the car in which both were.
Police confirmed to the herald that the grandfather notified his son-in-law that he had the boy and was going to kill him by burning him alive inside a motor vehicle.
Hours after the threat, the corpses of the boy and his grandfather were found in a burnt-out car in Shastri Street, Azaadville.
According to Kay Makhubela, provincial police spokesperson, “They were burned beyond recognition. So far we are investigating an inquest docket. We don’t know the motive yet but that will be established through our investigation.”
According to Zaheer Gangat, chairperson of the Randfontein CPF Executive Committee, “The community was notified that a car was on fire in Azaadville and that they should bring fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. The community stood together to try and stop the blaze but it was too late.”
